Enrollment Increases by 73% in Massachusetts Premium-Assistance Program for Laid-Off Workers

Enrollment in a Massachusetts program designed to help unemployed state residents pay health insurance premiums has increased by 73% in the past year, the Boston Globe reports. The state Medical Security Program, which is funded by a tax on employers, pays 80% of a laid-off worker's monthly insurance premium for up to 46 weeks. For people who cannot afford to retain their coverage, even with the assistance money, the program offers full basic coverage and charges a copayment of about $15 per doctor visit. To be eligible for the program, an individual's family income for the six months prior to being unemployed plus projected income for the next six months must not exceed 400% of the federal poverty level. About 13,000 unemployed state residents were enrolled in the program at the end of No...

After some quality time in Nara Visa, we pushed onto the Texas Panhandle for Cal Farley's Boys Ranch

Wrapping quality inn plaza orlando up in the Las Vegas New Mexico area, we headed south on I-25 for just a few miles, then picked up Highway 84 to just west of Santa Rosa. This is a stretch of Pre-1937 Route 66 in New Mexico before it was straightened quality inn plaza orlando out, cutting off this northern loop that used to go through Santa Fe.Along the way to Santa Rosa you'll pass through a couple of spots in the road. Like Apache Springs with just a few scattered houses and some ruins off the side of the road, and Dilia which shows a little more life, but still a small ranching/farming community. We experienced beautiful landscapes as we continued down in elevation, full of "nothingness" but gorgeous at the same time.the City of Natural Lakes. Founded quality inn plaza orlando in 1865, the town began as nothing more than a large Spanish Rancho, and was called Aqua Negro Chiquita. Sometime around 1890, it took a new name honoring a chapel built by Don Celso Baco who named it for his wife and Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized Saint of the "New World." Today, this popular town along America's Mother Road still provides area attractions through nearby quality inn plaza orlando lakes and streams, as well as plenty of photo ops through town of some of it's decades old and still operating Route 66 Icons.Between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari is what we refer to as a ghost town stretch of Route 66 that includes Cuervo, Newkirk and Montoya. These small towns got their start from Ranching and Railroad and for a time they were bustling quality inn plaza orlando with activity from the many travelers of Route 66. Today they are a shell of their former self with very few residents. The buildings tell of a time before the interstate when these small communities were important stops. Read more about this stretch HERE .After the ghost town stretch you'll find plenty quality inn plaza orlando more photo ops and some tasty choices in Tucumcari . Heading east into town you will first come to the New Mexico Route 66 Museum, dedicated to exploring quality inn plaza orlando the states 604 miles of original Mother Road. Up and down 66 through town you'll find icon after icon, like the famous Blue Swallow Motel, or Del's Restaurant (mighty tasty mexican food by the way..loved our lunch here). Once nicknamed "Six Shooter Siding", this town started around 1901 with the railroad and quickly became a bit rowdy with saloons, gamblers, dance hall girls and the like. Today travelers can get a great feel for the 1940's and 50's era of the Mother Road as many of the businesses have done a great job keeping up the Neon, and others have been painted with Route 66 themes. This would be all of the Mother Road on this segment of the trip though, as we cut north on Highway 54 for an overnight stay in Logan, just outside of Utte State Park, on our way to more old west history in the Texas Panhandle. (Stayed at Arrowhead RV Park on the east edge of town. Under new ownership for about a month, this was an alright stop for the night with full hookups, but was mostly long term campers working in the area. A little TLC, which the owner is in the process of giving, quality inn plaza orlando will go a long way here. Paid $15 (tax included) with our Passport membership). Not too far down the road from Logan on Highway 54 we came into Nara Visa, a ghost town lovers delight. This early 1900's town was built on the railroad, and started off as Narvaez, but English speaking quality inn plaza orlando settlers managed to mangle the name until it became Nara Visa. What is now just a small town with an open post office and Motel on the western quality inn plaza orlando end used to be home to several churches, eight saloons, dance halls, stores, and more. What used to be the bank, turned into a bar and looks like something we've seen in a movie, quality inn plaza orlando but couldn't find anything in our immediate research.retire, so Kathy got all the fun. We also heard from a reader on our Facebook page that the bank (now closed bar), which was the First National quality inn plaza orlando Bank of Nara Visa, was at one time the most robbed bank in the United States, including, according to our reader, by the Pretty Boy Floyd gang. After some quality time in Nara Visa, we pushed onto the Texas Panhandle for Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, which used to be the Old West town of Tascosa. This was once a rival to Dodge City for cattle markets, and was the capital of 10 counties. The post office was established in 1878, and by the 1880's it was already a rough town, famously known for a gun fight in 1886 at the Jenkins Saloon between two panhandle ranch factions that left four dead. You can visit their graves at the Boot Hill cemetery on the way into town.Julian Bivins quality inn plaza orlando Museum, housed in the original courthouse. It, and the old school house are the only two original structures remaining from Tascosa, which died as a town after the railroad built 50 miles north of town. By the 1930's the town was dead and Cal Farley's Boys Ranch was built on the site in 1938.For Legends' 10th Anniversary, quality inn plaza orlando Kathy wanted to pay tribute to her roots in the Texas Panhandle, as it was her Grandmother Irene Foster which gave her the "history bug" as a child. Hutchinson county has a pretty interesting history, quality inn plaza orlando especially with the oil industry. Like the wild and wooley town of Borger just a few miles down the road from Stinnett that was once so corrupt that the Governor of Texas had to send in the Texas Rangers. You can read our full story on Borger HERE .Stinnett wasn't always the county seat. The extinct town of Plemons held that honor for several years after getting it's start in the late 1800's. Hutchinson county is also home to Adobe Walls , the first trading post in this region established back in 1843. Just a marker in a field now, Adobe Walls also has the grave of William Billy Dixon , famous scout, buffalo hunter and Indian Fighter. Dixon was involved with the second "Battle of Adobe Walls", and is credited with being a hero two days into the battle, when a bullet from his Sharps buffalo rifle knocked an Indian off his horse nearly a mile away (perhaps exaggerated. Dixon himself never claimed credit for his "long shot."Kathy's great grandfather William Carson Womble settled in the area around 1902 and was good friends with Dixon up until Dixon's quality inn plaza orlando death in 1915. Womble would go on to become a county commissioner and played an important role in building the new county courthouse in Stinnett in the 1930's, which has his name engraved in the cornerstone of the building. Later, quality inn plaza orlando Kathy's grandfather Ben Foster (who married Irene Womble whom Kathy dedicates Legends Of America too) became the mechanical engineer for the courthouse. He and Irene would live in the basement apartment at the building for years, raising their children there. We took a tour of the courthouse so Kathy could relive childhood memories of playing in the halls. Heard a lot of "tales" from her on this trip about life at the courthouse, from sneaking into the library, to her mom, Wanda, quality inn plaza orlando climbing out on the upper floors ledge as a child and actually walking around the building.Kathy's written extensive history on Hutchinson County, it's towns and people which you can see HERE . Be sure to visit the link for Extinct Towns, Ghost Towns and Company Camps to see more about Plemons and other places that used to be part of the rich history quality inn plaza orlando here.(We stayed a couple of nights by the city park in Stinnett in a small (3 or 4 space) RV parking area. Full hookups, and it was "Free" for 3 nights, then $10 per night after [no long term campers]. We think it's great promotion for a city to do this, and loved the fact we could take advantage of it. The only thing we would suggest is that the city perform the same care with the RV area that they do with the park, as it was full of good ol' Texas stickers and hardly any grass)

Matt Harvey clears up Derek comparison: 'I wanted to be like Jeter in good ways'

Matt Harvey unintentionally opened up a real can of worms when excerpts from a Men's Journal article yesterday quoted the Mets pitcher saying — even with his own movie star looks and beautiful girlfriend — he admired Derek Jeter and wanted to be more like the Yankees star, among other pronouncements.“That guy is the model,” Harvey said in the article. “I mean, first off, let’s just look at the women he’s dated. Obviously, he goes out – he’s meeting these girls somewhere – but you never hear about it. That’s where I want to be.”Well, something about that did not sit well with Harvey — and probably not with his steady girlfriend Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Anne V either — and today, the New York Mets All-Star pitcher tweeted, “It really sucks how words get used and completely taken out of context.”It really sucks how words get used and completely taken out of context.— Matt Harvey (@MattHarvey33) July 18, 2013Harvey tried to clarify his words.“I said I wanted to be like Jeter in good ways," he told The New York Daily News. "I used an example of how he probably goes out, but you never hear anything bad.“I love watching Jeter because he played hard every single night and was a winner. When I moved to NYC, the respect for him grew, because I realized what the media was like.  And for him, he always stayed out of the bad media, making him a leader on and off the field.” And it's bad to be like Jeter in what ways?So apparently it's not all about handing out morning-after autographed, swag bags to a conga-line of beautiful models and actresses that Harvey wants to emulate — it’s the winning play, and ability to handle the media spotlight in New York. There really doesn’t seem to be any need to worry about Harvey’s focus says Mets manager Terry Collins. Collins loves the young man’s focus and drive, and sees nothing different about his rising star in recent months.  As the world has asked more of Harvey, he has enjoyed the spotlight, but not at the expense of his job.“No,” he said, quick and definitive, when asked this week if he was worried about Harvey’s focus.  “He’s a great kid.”Again. It's bad to be like Jeter in what ways?

Study In Still Life

Wowzie...... I quit my other crazy Chef job to do more and focus on what I am passionate about, now I find I don't have enough time to fit everything in that I'm mad silly about! Plus with more time to cook, bake, read, think, research, visualize, create, drink coffee etc. I am discovering more, more & more, oh my. The world is my oyster! This is fun.Which leads me to my newest discovery, most likely this is old news to everyone else, fresh brewed ice tea, LOVE! note: I am a serious coffee lover and haven't experienced the tea thing, so bear with me, please. It all started with my tired achy out of shape arms/back/body schlepping cases of bottled ice tea, yuck, to the Cowbell, I said to myself, really?Light bulb goes on in my tiny brain and I think brew tea then you only have to carry the concentrate. My bestie who lives in Brooklyn, mecca of trendy food & stuff, told me about a tea company, Porto Rico Importing Company on Bleeker St. since 1907. Ordered up some and nuff said. Next I've got peach and vanilla coming, refreshing.Tomorrow mint.        Mint Tea Leaves, so pretty        next I find this recipe for your ice tea & I have it growing in my yard!Honeysuckle Simple Syrup4 cups honeysuckle blossoms, lightly packedwatersugarPlace blossoms in a bowl, pour over just enough boiling water to cover them. Cover, and let sit on the counter over night, up to 24 hours. After steeping the flowers (they will look totally gross and brown, but smell amazing), strain the liquid into a large bowl, discarding the blossoms. Measure the liquid and place into a large saucepan. For each cup of water, use one cup of sugar. Bring sugar and water to a boil and simmer until the sugar is dissolved, 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely. The syrup should keep for up to a month in the fridge.                                                                           fabulous!Next peaches, my taste buds are madly in love with this fruit that is starting to come into its season. I bought my first case of peaches yesterday at the Leesburg Farmers Market. Today was the first step in a 2 day process of making peach jam. First you clean, peel, cut up & macerate the peaches with sugar and lemon. Cover and refrigerate for at least 24 hours then tomorrow when I get home I will start the cooking process. So worth the time and effort.I will use the jam for pop tart filling and all sorts of yummy things. I made more tomato jam and red onion jam to go on the roasted pork loin melt for Saturday's menu.Off the jam topic, made Oreo cookies for the weekend!!!!  P.S. Keep the reservations coming for Twinkle Bell Secret Dining Fellowship July 27th event. It is going to be a blast! Thanks for all the support and enthusiasm!!!!! more still life......                                                                          XXOO,Cher

Beliebing in Hockey

How do you get people talking about hockey? Bring in Justin Bieber. Now, not only do you have the NHL and ESPN talking about hockey, but you have Yahoo! and E! Online and CBS Sports, and the Huffington Post.Outrage ensued when pictures were shown of Justin Bieber posing with the Stanley Cup in the Chicago Blackhawks locker room, and also that he was taking a picture of The Cup while standing on the Blackhawks logo in the locker room.I am going to go out on a limb here and say that there is not a correlation between avid hockey fans and Justin Bieber fans, even though, from what I've read, Bieber is, in fact, a fan of the sport, and Canadian to boot. Twitter went all Amanda Bynes about this event - people were demanding why Bieber was allowed anywhere near The Cup? Why was he allowed to perform in the same arena as The Cup champs? Who let him into the locker room? Here's the real question - what is the huge deal?We all know that Justin Bieber is one of the more polarizing celebrities that we have out there right now. Either you are one of his "Bieliebers" or you loath everything the guy does, artistically or otherwise. There are those, like myself, who are indifferent toward the Biebs, who do not quite understand the fervor and drama that follows this guy wherever he goes - this time into the locker room of the Chicago Blackhawks. Are fans upset because it was Bieber out of all celebrities, or are they upset that ANYONE got to touch The Cup. The Stanley Cup is one of the most venerated trophies in sports. This is due largely in part to the fact that it is the oldest trophy - beating the NBA and NFL, as well as its size, and what it contains, the engraved names of the winning players and teams (up to 55 per team). Also, The Cup is not replicated, liked others. There is only one... Because it's The Cup. Due to these reasons, as well as a few extras, that the trophy is regarding as the Holy Grail of the sport. Some people were upset that anyone in general got to touch it - let along Justin Bieber - one of the most talked about (good or bad) celebrities we have out there right now.I noticed on one comments board someone said "It's a sad day in sports journalism." And with this fan I would have to agree. I wish I could say I was an avid hockey fan - though I am not. I am getting into the sport, and have done more and more over the past few seasons. However, those that I know who follow the sport in the same way that I follow others complain constantly about the lack of quality coverage surrounding the sport. It is apparent that hockey does not garner the same attention the baseball, football, and basketball get. The reasons why can be dissected at a later date. Something like this brings this to our attention. When going to the homepage of a site like ESPN.com, one notices that the headlines to the right seldom contain any information about hockey. You have to delve into the NHL tab of the site - and even then, from what I gather, the quality isn't that great. Also, there is a full arsenal of commentators for the Big Three sports, and for hockey the only mainstay has been Barry Melrose. I am calling ESPN out here because there are the largest player, but you see where I am going with this.I feel like this story has gotten more attention that the Blackhawks actually winning The Cup. Therefore, I have to say, the most upsetting thing about this whole Bieb-tastic story is that it takes something like this to bring attention to a sport.Belieb that.

James Gandolfini Dies - A Bruce Springsteen Song In Tribute

James Gandolfini.Very sad news about actor James Gandolfini who has died of a suspected heart-attack at the age of just 51 while on holiday in Italy. Only a couple of weeks ago Pam Corkery and I were talking on The Two (Newstalk ZB Friday and Sunday evenings from 8pm) about how The Sopranos had just been voted the best written TV show of all time, a show I always liked a great deal and Pam always loved.Gandolfini played mob boss Tony Soprano from 1999 to 2007 and the thing that struck me today was how young he must've been when he took on what became one of the most iconic roles in American television history. Doesn't 37 seem young to play a mob boss? But Gandolfini always had a presence, whether intimidating or vulnerable.News of Gandolfini's death is extra sad when you learn he leaves behind not only a teenage son from his first marriage, but a wife of five years and a baby girl who hasn't even celebrated her first birthday. As far as tributes go, I see the creator of The Sopranos David Chase has today called his friend a genius, saying that, "a great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes."So with that in mind, here is a song for James Gandolfini, a truly beautiful buried treasure of a Bruce Springsteen song. Recorded in 1990 and staggeringly left off both of Springsteen's underbought, simultaneously released 1992 albums Human Touch and Lucky Town, this is one of my favourite of his ballads. Sad, beautiful and a potential hit, this is Sad Eyes.
